A Night Out in Split [Part 1/2]

This past weekend was filled with a visit to Podstrana and Split, a town and city on the Adriatic sea and just a two hour drive away from Mostar. My friends and I booked a stay in the Pension Amigos in Podstrana located right on the beach. From there it was only a 10 minute drive to Split, where we spent a great night out. I have shown Split during day previously on this blog, but this time it was not only nighttime, but we also ventured further into the labyrinth that is the old town of Split I hope you will enjoy these.

This is a two part travel series. Click below for more:
A Night Out in Split [Part 1/2]
A Night Out in Split [Part 2/2]

Leaving for Split

It was around 9 in the evening when we left for Split. The sky still had a tinge of blue left and a soft breeze was rolling in from the sea. People were in restaurants having dinner or walking the beach. Podstrana is really a great place to stay, swim and relax and with Split close by, we had a chance to do more upbeat things. After finding a parking spot we started on a stroll through the harbor walking area called Riva.

A Stroll along the Walking Lane

The Riva is a beautiful part of Split. After having been redone completely a few years back, the new modern walking lane features both sights of yachts and boats in the harbor as well as many cafes and restaurants along the old buildings. That night a soccer game was on on almost every TV in the city, since the European soccer tournament is still going. We did stop from time to time to look at the score, but mostly we strolled through the old harbor before eventually heading deeper into the old town structures.

Heading Inside

Inside the walls of this old town structure you can find many things. From small and narrow streets to squares filled with people. It's interesting how the dynamic in the city keeps changing. You can find almost empty places inside the old walls and then you turn a corner and you are surrounded by lots of other tourists and locals.

You can stop at many places here and simply gaze at the beauty of the old town. For example the next image shows my sister Jasmina and her boyfriend Amer standing on the cobble street looking at the shop display. I moved back a bit and the view showed the arches of the town as well as the surrounding houses. Everything is lit up beautifully at night, with attention payed to every detail.

The Old and New Split at Night

At the Dioklecian Palace a concert was being held. This Palace is part of UNESCO's World Heritage List. The importance of the palace far transcends local significance because of its level of preservation and the buildings of succeeding historical periods, starting in the Roman period, which form the base of old Split. The palace is one of the most famous architectural and cultural buildings on the Croatian Adriatic coastline. It's also know for being one of the many shooting locations of the TV Show Game of Thrones. If you are interested to know more about it, click here for my in-depth tour.

Turning a Corner

As the night progressed so did our stroll through the old city walls. We stopped at one lovely little square to take some portraits (which you'll see in part two) and eventually headed deeper into the unexplored parts of Split at night.
